What a $452.87 cup holder taught me about the value of service

This past week, the bottom of the cup holder in my Ford Explorer dropped down leaving a gap. Sounds minor — until my keys and key fob slid straight down into the console, disappearing into the dash. As with longarm repair, I had to ask myself if I wanted to try to take things apart to dig them out or call the professionals to fix it.

While they were in there, they found something else that had gone missing — probably the Sunday before, on the drive to church: a pearl necklace.

Here's the part that stuck with me, though. When the dealer gave me the estimate, it covered the labor to open the console and retrieve everything. What it didn't mention — until the bill arrived — was the cost of the new cup holder and the reinforcement clips needed to keep it from failing again. That number showed up after the work was already done, not before. I paid it. But I felt blindsided. If I'd known the real cost going in, I might have been tempted to just duct-tape and superglue the thing back together myself and call it a day — which, if I'm honest, probably would have made the next repair worse and more expensive.

That's not a great feeling to walk away with. And it's exactly the feeling we never want you to have with us.

Why this matters to MK Quilts

We have to charge enough to fund the training, expertise, and support that make owning an HQ machine worth it — but charging enough and surprising you are two different things.

Starting September 1st, we're adjusting our pricing model and adding an online estimate calculator so you know labor costs before you call. We also stock the largest inventory of parts outside of Handi Quilter itself — we don't set what those parts cost, but we promise to give you the cost up front before the repair.

A word on warranty coverage

Worth a reminder while we're on the topic: Handi Quilter machines carry a 5-year warranty on most parts and a 2-year warranty on the ProStitcher tablet/computer. A lot of what might worry you about an unexpected repair bill is often already covered — one more reason to call us before assuming the worst.

And if you're an MK Owner or ESP member, you already get 10% off most products on our website — parts included.

The takeaway

Nobody loves an unexpected bill. We can't promise every repair will be cheap — some won't be — but we can promise you'll know the number before you're standing at pickup wondering how a cup holder turned into $452.87. That's the deal. That's the value of service done right.

Got a machine that's making a noise it shouldn't, or a part you're not sure is covered under warranty? Give us a call before it becomes a bigger job than it needs to be.

30% off through September — here's what that discount actually buys you

Handi Quilter is extending their 30% off retail promotion on longarm machines through the end of September. If you've been waiting for the right time to buy, this is it — and we'll match that price.

Handi Quilter is extending their 30% off retail promotion on longarm machines through the end of September. If you've been waiting for the right time to buy, this is it — and we'll match that price.

Here's what we want you to understand before you do, though, because it matters.

Matching the price means matching what's included

A 30% discount has to come from somewhere. For us, that means a price-matched machine comes with the same included service level you'd get from a typical Sew n Vac shop — not the full MK Quilts experience our regular customers know us for. That's not a bait-and-switch. It's just math: we can't give you Handi Quilter's price and MK Quilts' full white-glove service on top of it for free. Nobody can.

So here's the real choice in front of you.

Option one: add ESP

Add our Exceptional Service Program to the order, and you get MK Quilts' full service tier back — the same training, support, and priority access our regular customers rely on, on a machine priced at the promotional rate.

Option two: go without

You're still fully covered by what every Handi Quilter retailer is required to provide: 90 days of free labor, no matter where you bought the machine. On top of that, we'll give you access to our 90-minute new owner video and the direct phone number for Handi Quilter's main support line. What you won't get is the extra training, priority scheduling, and discounts that come with our normal service relationship.

Both are legitimate ways to buy a machine. Neither is a trick. You're just choosing which kind of ownership experience you want to have for the next several years.

The way I think about it

MK Quilts, at full service, is a luxury vacation resort. The no-ESP price-matched tier is a Super 8 motel. Both will get you a place to sleep. Only one of them anticipates what you need before you ask for it.

Thirty percent off is a great deal either way. Just know which one you're buying.

Questions about ESP or what's included at each tier? Give us a call — we'd rather you ask now than wonder later.
